Confessions of an 80s kid turned
Comic Geek

I have been a comic book “geek” for as long as I can remember, long before it was popular to be into such things. I can still remember the first comic book I ever picked up. Detective Comics #647, a pre-Knightfall edition of the Dark Knight, which saw the dynamic duo waging battle with a forgettable villain known as the Cluemaster. (It’s the first appearance of Stephanie Brown, aka Spoiler, and onetime Robin and Batgirl for those keeping track.) The issue itself in all honestly wasn’t all that memorable, yet it led me into the world of comic books, of which I’ve been a part of ever since.

Having grown up a kid of the 80s, I unfortunately came across comics a little late. I was already a devote fan of such 80s cartoon franchises as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Thundercats when I came upon what I would argue is one of the greatest comic book movies ever made, Batman Returns. Without waging the whole “Who’s the best Batman argument?”, (though clearly Michael Keaton was the best, just saying!), it was a comic book film that had vision and gravitas, luring me into the world of Gotham City and leaving me wanting more.

Need an Easy Escape Close to Home?

Ever wished for an escape from the daily grind, where a journey to a new place abounds? Where catching up with an old friend is second nature and surprise discoveries await around every corner? Look no further than a visit to Half Price Books. The discount book retailer is still holding on to their original company motto of “We buy and sell anything printed or recorded except yesterday’s newspaper”. Each store is a reflection of the neighborhood it’s located in, as most products sold are brought in by residents of the neighborhood itself.

Due to the continued rise of Amazon’s two-day shipping model at a steep discount, brick and mortar bookstores in recent years have struggled to stay afloat. Half Price Books seems to have found a way to maintain sustainability by sticking to its main business strategy of re-selling books of all natures at half off the list price. Though that strategy is tried and true to the company’s overall brand, it has begun to evolve in recent years, as locations have branched into additional merchandising to remain competitive with the changing times. Where once locations were filled to the brim with only books specifically, due to the ever-changing retail market, the chain has begun to incorporate other streams of revenue through their stores, including the sale of vinyl records, movies and various forms of entertainment memorabilia and gadgets. There truly is something for everyone!

Next time there are just a few minutes to spare in the day, stop into Half Price Books. Each visit is a guaranteed treasure simply waiting to be uncovered.

A Slice of American Pie

The Last Picture Show, an American coming of age film by director Peter Bogdanovich is an acclaimed American classic, notable for many star turns from individuals who would go on to find much later success, including Jeff Bridges, Randy Quaid and Cybill Shepherd. The movie seems a precursor to the advent of the teen coming of age genre that director John Hughes seems to have dominated throughout the 1980’s with modern day classics as The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles, and is truly ahead of its time when compared to the raunchy millennium take on the teen coming of age film, American Pie, which seems to have taken many of it’s plot cues from Bogdanovich’s early entry into the genre, including a teens loss of virginity, sex with a prostitute and sex with an older woman.

Adapted from a semi-autobiographical novel written by acclaimed author Larry McMurtry, known for his other works including Terms of Endearment and Brokeback Mountain, The Last Picture Show can be seen as a typical coming of age film, which focuses on the psychological and moral growth or transition of a protagonist, in this case the character of Sonny, as they navigate the throes of life into adulthood. Though the importance of the film with it’s cultural and historical significance can’t be argued, that it is merely a film preoccupied with teenage sex should not be entirely overlooked, as the trajectory of the film seems to lead more towards the sexual experiences of the characters than of any true character growth of significance. As such, The Last Picture Show is truly not just a coming of age story, but also an American teen sex film that treats sex as the true basis of life as well as a catalyst to forge through whatever obstacles life may present.
